Scarlet-headed blackbird (Amblyramphus holosericeus)

Scientific Classification:

Kingdom : Animalia
Phylum : Chordata

Order : Passeriformes
Family :Icteridae
Genus : Amblyramphus
Species :
A. Holosericeus

Description:

The Scarlet-headed blackbird (Amblyramphus holosericeus) is an icterid bird of southern South American wetlands.

This species is about 24 cm long. The bill is oddly shaped: long, slender, and very sharp, looking almost upturned. Adults of both sexes are described by their name. Juveniles have entirely black plumage; orange-red feathers first appear on their breast and throat, later spreading to the neck, head, and thighs. The song is given as "loud, clear, and melodic, a ringing 'cleer-cleer-clur, clulululu'." Calls are simpler but have a similar quality.

Scarlet-headed blackbirds occur in pairs in large reed beds in southern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina; Bolivia has an isolated population at altitudes up to about 600 m. They often perch conspicuously on top of stems. They are uncommon, particularly away from the coast.

They eat mainly fruit, supplementing it with seeds and invertebrates, especially insects. They use their bill as a hammer to open food items.

Scarlet-headed blackbirds are monogamous, and territories are grouped together. The nest is an open cup placed in the crotch of a shrub or woven into vegetation, in which they lay two eggs.

Brief Description:

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: Clearly Cristianism or Catholicism, and in particular the Instituteinside the Catolic Churchnamed Society of St. Francis de Sales founded by Saint John Bosco, whose 200th Anniversaryis honoured with this issue.

The Salesians of Don Bosco (or the Salesian Society, officially named the Society of St. Francis de Sales) is a Roman Catholicreligious institute founded in the late nineteenth century by Saint John Bosco to help poor children during the Industrial Revolution. The Salesians' charter describes the society's mission as "the Christian perfection of its associates obtained by the exercise of spiritual and corporal works of charity towards the young, especially the poor, and the education of boys to the priesthood".The institute is named after Francis de Sales, an early-modern bishop from Geneva.

St. John Bosco, in Italian: Giovanni Melchiorre Bosco, born on August 16th of 1815and passed away on January 31st of 1888, popularly known as Don Bosco, was an Italian Roman Catholic priestof the Latin Church, educator and writer of the 19th century. While working in Turin, where the population suffered many of the effects of industrializationand urbanization, he dedicated his life to the betterment and education of street children, juvenile delinquents, and other disadvantaged youth. He developed teaching methods based on love rather than punishment, a method that became known as the Salesian Preventive System. A follower of the spirituality and philosophy of Saint Francis de Sales, Bosco dedicated his works to him when he founded the Salesians of Don Bosco, based in Turin. Together with Maria Domenica Mazzarello, he founded the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, a religious congregation of nuns dedicated to the care and education of poor girls.

In 1876 Bosco founded a movement of laity, the Association of Salesian Cooperators, with the same educational mission to the poor. In 1875 he began to publish the Salesian Bulletin. The Bulletinhas remained in continuous publication, and is currently published in 50 different editionsand 30 languages.

Boscoestablished a network of organizations and centres to carry on his work. Following his beatification in 1929, he was canonized as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church by Pope Pius XI in 1934.

The desing of the Issue, connects with Childhood as Don Bosco is shown listening to a Child, and also Hats, and Religious CostumesTopic could be added by the scene depicted. Then Block and FDC Cancellationsdid not add much Topics, just a reinforce to Childhood or Youth by the Block, and a kind of Path in the Cancellation.

Brief Description:

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: Painters, in particular the Uruguayan Painters, and among them, the ones selected this year for this annual issue of National Painters, that are: Federico Sáez and Anhelo Hernandez.  Also undoubtely ArtTopic is included too, in particular Paintingsand Uruguayan Paintings, and also Art Noveau, as both Artistcould be included in that category.

Carlos Federico Sáez(14 November 1878, Mercedes - 4 January 1901, Montevideo) was an Artistfrom Uruguay. He was born into a wealthy family in the city of Mercedes in western Uruguay. By the age of 13he was producing outstanding paintings and drawings. In 1891 he moved to Montevideo to study with the painter Juan Franzi. The well-known painter Juan Manuel Blanes recommended that Sáez go to study in Italy, which was a fairly common practice for wealthy young artists in Uruguay at that time. The national government provided him with an art scholarship at just 14 years of age. He spent the next seven years in Rome. He entered the Academy of Fine Artsin 1893, but was interested in new artistic movements such as the Macchiaioli and Art Nouveau. In 1896 he set up his own atelier in the Via Margutta, offering a number of shows. In 1900 he fell ill and returned to Montevideowhere he died shortly after at the age of 22.

Sáez painted mainly Portraits. His work is characterised by Loose Brush Strokes that still convey a Realistic Precision. While he was in Italy he painted a number of portraits where the canvas is left visible - a technique used in Abstract Art, and which was not seen elsewhere until 1910. In his short career he produced more than 70 oil paintings and 100 drawings. He is considered one of the principal Uruguayan artists and the first to produce truly modern art.

Anhelo Hernández Ríos(Montevideo, Uruguay, 1922-2010) Artist, Researcher and Professor of Uruguay. He was born on November 21, 1922. Between 1935and 1941, he studied sculpture and drawing with Alberto Savio, a disciple of Aristide Maillol. In 1941, he entered the School of Applied Artsand studied with Antonio Pena, Edmundo Pratto and F. Moller De Berg. In 1942he became a student of the newly formed National School of Fine Artsand attended the workshop of the sculptor Severino Pose. In late 1942he joined the workshop of Joaquín Torres García, of which it was part until the master's death in 1949. In 1969 he won on a competitive grant from the Union of Artists of Uruguay to study and work at the School of Art Berlinwhere his mentor was Professor Arno Mohr

Then, looking more at the desing of the Issue, each Stamp shows a Painting of each of the Artist, and the Topics that appears in each one are very different. In the first stamp, the Painting "El Chal Rojo", that in English means "The Red Shawl", shows a Portraitof a wealthy young lady wearing that Clothing Adornment, the Shawl, that give the name to the Painting.

The second Paintingis called "Eros and Psique", in which, although the representation is quite Abstract, it main elements is a barely Nude Androgynous Couple Huggingand probably Kissing, surrounded by a kind of Constructionsthat reminds a Suburb.

Finally, a few more Topics could be add, as Paintbrush, and Palette, because of the icons that shows the ink colours used in the printing of the Block, and also Sun, Astronomy, Maps, and Maps of Uruguay as they appear in the FDC Cancelation.

If you consider that there are another topics in this stamp, that were not spot in this review, you are encouraged to telling me about them, so please do not hesitate to post a comment. I would appreciate your help very much.

Brief Description:

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: Clearly Masonry or Freemasonry, and in particular Freemasonryin Uruguay, and even more precisely the Masonic Lodge "Gran Oriente de Uruguay", whose 25th Anniversary is honoured with this issue.

Freemasonryis a Fraternal Organisation that traces its origins to the local fraternities of Stonemasons, which from the end of the XIV Century regulated the qualifications of Stonemasons and their interaction with authorities and clients. Masons are members of the organization. The degrees of Freemasonry, its gradal system, retain the three grades of medieval craft guilds, those of Apprentice, journeyman or fellow (now called Fellowcraft), and Master Mason. These are the degrees offered by craft, or blue lodge Freemasonry. There are additional degrees, which vary with locality and jurisdiction, and are now administered by different bodies than the craft degrees.

The basic, local organisational unit of Freemasonry is the Lodge. The Lodgesare usually supervised and governed at the regional level (usually coterminous with either a state, province, or national border) by a Grand Lodge or Grand Orient. There is no international, world-wide Grand Lodge that supervises all of Freemasonry. Each Grand Lodge is independent, and they do not necessarily recognise each other.

Then, the desing of the Issue is divided in three clearly defined components, two of them sharing the foreground, that are the kind of Coin that is shown at right, and the Sculptureat Left, over a background of a Chessboard like Floor Tileswith three different Columnsover it, and a full of Stars Sky behind them.

The Coinbrings obviously NumismaticTopic to the Release, also Metalsand Minerals, in particular Gold, as the most probable Materialin which the Coinis made. Then, from the elements in the Coin, clearly the Square and Compass, main Symbols of the Freemasonry, and also Toolsof Measurementand Construction. Also the inscription of "Libertad, Igualdad, Fraternidad" included in the Coin, refers to the French Phrase "Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité" from the French Revolution, so there is here a link to the France as a Country, and to Democracy, Republicanism, and Liberalism Ideologies.

Then, the Sculpture, besides bringing Artto the Topics of the Issue, it also brings Work, as it is the Topic of the Scuplture, and also Marble, because of the Materialin which it was made, and even the Sculptor Angel Ferrari Rocca as the Artist who made the Sculpture that is shown in the Stamp.

Finally, the background of the Stamp links the Release to Architecture by the Columns, to Astronomy or Space, through the Stars and Sky, and Chess because of the Chessboardlike Tiles.

If you consider that there are another topics in this stamp, that were not spot in this review, you are encouraged to telling me about them, so please do not hesitate to post a comment. I would appreciate your help very much.

Brief Description:

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: Although it was issued to Celebrate a new year of uninterrupted Diplomatic Relationship between Egypt and Uruguay since 1932, whose natural Topic is International Diplomacy, or Diplomatic Relationships, both Contentand Designof the Releasemade us conclude that Egyptologyand Music, were clearly the Topicsin which this Issuehas his Focuson.

The Contentof this Release is clearly directed to Ancient Egyptian History, perhaps more specificaly in it Religionand Culture, as it commemorates the 125th Anniversary of the presence of the ESO ERIS Mummy in Uruguay. This Mummy was donated, by the Uruguayan Engineer Luis Viglione, to the National Museum of Natural Arts, in 1890. Studies indicate that the Mummified Body dates from between 664 and 525 BC. ESO-ERIS was a Priestess of the Temple of God Min, in the city of Akhmim, where during Religious Ceremonies ran a Musical Instrumentcalled Sistrum, and in this Roleof ESO-ERISit is implied the relationship with MusicTopic, which will be clearly reinforced also by the Design.

Then, looking more at the desing of the Issue, besides that all Elements in the Release are connected with Egyptology, the foucus is put in the Topic Music, honouring the Roleof ESO-ERIS, and other Priestessesof the Temple of God Min, which this connection between Musicand Religion, put them in the Highest Status in Ancient Egyptian Culture.

The connection with Musicin the Designare two, both Related in particular with Musical Instruments. One is made by the First Stamp, that shows a Sistrum, a Musical Instrumentof the Percussion Family, chiefly associated with Ancient Iraq and Egypt, that consists of a Handleand a U-shaped Metal Frame, made of Brassor Bronzeand between 30 and 76 cm in width, that, when shaken, the small rings or loops of thin metal on its movable crossbars produce a sound that can be from a Soft Clank to a Loud Jangling. Its name in the Ancient Egyptian languagewas Sekhem (sḫm)and Sesheshet (sššt). Sekhem is the simpler, Hoop-like Sistrum, while Sesheshet(an onomatopoeic word) is the Naos-shapedone.

The second connection to Music, is done outside the Stamps, in the Blockdecoration, as the Main Scene represented in the Block is a group of three Priestessesof the Temple of God Minrunning different Musical Instruments during a Religious Ceremony. The Musical Instruments shown in this Scene seems to be some similar, when reading the Design from left to right, to the actual ones: Flute, Guitar, and Harp, however, the precise name of these Musical Instruments it is not said in the Design.

Also from this Scene other Topicsarises, the most related one could be Ancient Egyptian Clothes, as the Block shows how the Priestessesof the Temple of God Minusually were dressed in. As in these Ceremonies, Priestesses used to wear Semi-Transparent Clothes or being barely NakedNudes or Female Nudes, could be included as Topicsof this Issue too, and finally, Earrings, Jewlery, Dresses, and Wigs, are Topics that also are related to this Releasethrough this Scene.

Then, the Backgroundof the Blockincludes in a clever way the Textureof the Linen, a Textilemade from the Fibersof the Flaxplant, Linum usitatissimum. Linenis laborious to manufacture, but the fiber is very absorbent, and garments made of linen are valued for their exceptional coolness and freshness in hot weather, that it is why Linen was the most common textile in Ancient Egyptian Culture, and also the only one not forbidden in Temples and Sanctuaries.

The last Topicsincluded by the Block, are a minor and possible Arabic Characters, and another way more Popular as it is Flags, as the Block Designincludes in it Right-Top Corner both, the Flag of Egypt, and the Flag of Uruguay. The Flag of Egypt is a tricolour consisting of the three equal horizontal red, white, and black bands of the Arab Liberation Flag dating back to the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, and the flag bears Egypt's National Emblem, the Eagle of Saladin centered in the white band. So, besides much of Arab Historyis include in the Flag, also Birds, and Eaglesor Birds of PreyTopics are included too by the Egyptian Flag. Then the Flag of Uruguayincludes the presence of the Sun, and with this the Topics Astronomy and Space are linked by this issue, and in particular this Sun, the Sun of May refers to the May Revolution, a week-long series of events that took place from May 18 to 25, 1810, in Buenos Aires, capital of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. This Spanish colony included roughly the territories of present-day Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay. The result was the removal of Viceroy Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisnerosand the establishment of a local government, the Primera Junta (First Junta), on May 25. It is also claimed that the Sun of May is a representation of the Inca Sun god Inti, and also another view is that is influenced by the emblem of the French Revolution, and that emblem was taken from the Freemasonic representations of the All-seeing eye.

Now, returning to Stamps, more precisely to Stamp Two, which design was not analyzed yet, it clearly includes MaskTopic, and more specifically Funerary Mask or Mortuary Mask. It also, because of the Materials in which it was made, Metalsand in particular Goldget related to this Release by the Mask. Then, also Egyptian Hieroglyphs, as some of them are seen in the Mask decoration, so Language, and Ancient Egyptian Art, is included too.

Finally, just a few words about the First Day Cancellation, that it is a nice piece of Art, showing one Architectural Capital specific for the Ancient Egyptian Civilization, that relates this issue to Architecture and also to ColumnsTopics.
