CELEBRATIONS – CHINESE NEW YEAR – FIRE MONKEY “2016”

Celebrations - Chinese New Year

Fire Monkey "2016"

Characteristics:

Start : February 8th, 2016
End : January 27th, 2017
Element : Fire

Description:

The Monkey (猴)is the ninthof the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese zodiac related to the Chinese calendar. The Year of the Monkey is associated with the Earthly Branch symbol 申.

Personality:

Occupying the 9th position on the Chinese Zodiac, the Monkey possesses such character traits as curiosity, mischievousness, and cleverness. Forever playful, Monkeys are the masters of practical jokes. Even though their intentions are always good, this desire to be a prankster has a tendency to create ill will and hurt feelings.

Although they are inherently intellectual and creative, Monkeys at times have trouble exhibiting these qualities. When that happens, they appear to others to be confused. But nothing could be further from the truth as Monkeys thrive on being challenged. Monkeys prefer urban life to rural, and their favorite pastime is people-watching.

The Fire Monkey:

The Fire Monkey is the most active and aggressive of the Monkeys. Naturally dominant, he automatically gravitates towards leadership roles and is competitive in whatever he is doing. He will need to be careful not to let this overwhelm him and turn into toxic jealousy.

He also constantly strives to be in control of whatever situation he is in, which can become overbearing. The main drive for whatever he embarks on is to head straight for the top and stay there. However, when he is in charge of a situation, his people skills kick in and he does nurture those under his charge who need it.

With his Fire energy, this agile, impulsive Monkey often leaps where angels fear to tread. This reckless behavior sometimes turns out to not be to the Fire Monkey’s advantage. However, he is very creative, dynamic and has a particularly good talent at drawing people to him – this often helps him get out of scrapes. He’ll leap from tree to tree – whichever has the most fruit at the time – then find the quickest, cleverest escape before others get to him.

In general though, the Fire Monkey is flamboyant and charmingly friendly, and has a large social circle.

Life Lessons:

The Fire Monkey’s aggression needs to be channeled correctly to correct and positive directions, or he risks become very destructive and harmful. If the Fire Monkey could develop more patience, it would be good for him and those who work with him The Fire Monkey also needs to think through his ideas before acting on them in order to safeguard his own interests.

Brief Description:

A brief description of the Most Popular Topics of this Release are: Armenian People, the Country Armenia, focused on Armenian History, in particular the Armenian Genocide, as this series commemorate the Centenaryof this tragic event in the History of mankind.

Also, this release could fit in Century XX History and World War I Topics, as a rough time location, and the Ottoman Empire, also historically referred to as the Turkish Empire or Turkey, a Sunni Islamicstate founded in 1299by Oghuz Turksunder Osman Iin northwestern Anatolia, as the perpetuator of this Genocide.

Then, looking more at the desing of the Issue, the focus of it is in The Armenian Genocide memorial complex, also named Tsitsernakaberd, the Armenia's official memorial dedicated to the victims of the Armenian Genocide, built in 1967on the Hill of Tsitsernakaberd in Yerevan, the Capital and Largest city of Armenia, and one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities.

This Memorial was designed by ArchitectsArthur Tarkhanyan, Sashur Kalashyanand Artist Hovhannes Khachatryan. The 44-meter Stelesymbolizes the national rebirth of Armenians. Twelve slabs are positioned in a circle, representing the 12 lost provinces in present day Turkey. In the center of the circle, at a depth of 1.5 meters, there is an eternal flame dedicated to the 1.5 million people killed during the Armenian Genocide. Along the park at the memorial there is a 100 meter wall with the names of towns and villages where massacres and deportations are known to have taken place. On the rear side of the commemoration wall, plateshave been attached to honor persons who committed themselves to relieving the distress of the survivors during and after the genocide (among others: Johannes Lepsius, Franz Werfel, Armin T. Wegner, Henry Morgenthau Sr., Fridtjof Nansen, Pope Benedict XV, Jakob Künzler, Bodil Biørn). An alley of treeshas been planted to commemorate the genocide victims.

Finally, besides the Architecture, Sculpture, Monument, Art, and even Fire Topics that The Armenian Genocide memorial complex, includes, the design of both the Block and the First Day Cancelation, also add a Flower, that it shape and colours, this last one seen only in the block, clearly refers to the Flowersknown as Forget-me-nots, that are any one of a number of species of Flowering plants in the Genus Myosotis, being the name of these Flowers and explicit symbolism of objective of this release.

Issue:

As Main Topic: I think that Naval Battleswill be the most precise, and at the same type popular enough to choose, although it clearly fit in many other Collections that could be divided in the following two branches: War and Ships.

From the branch of War, could be this huge Topic itself, and also the smaller one Battles, and the even smaller South-America Battles.

Then, for the other branch, the Ships one, could be this as the more abarcative one, then reducing the scope, clearly appears War Ships, then also Old Shipsand Sailing Ships, as these were the ships that fight in this battle, and finally Frigate or Sailing Frigate, as was the kind of Ship that was the Flagshipof the winning side, the Frigate "Hercules" to be more specific, led by Admiral William Brown(also known in Spanish as Guillermo Brown or Almirante Brown).

Then, surrounding the main topic, could be found the followings: The easiest to identify is Bicentenaries, then we go directly to a more significant one that is History Topic, unfortunately not too much wider than the previous one mentioned War Topic. However, this release is clearly more useful for more specific collections like: History of Uruguay and History of Argentina, inside a wider History of Southamerica, probably better in a one focused on the Emancipation of Southamerica, or the Liberty of Southamerica, or the Spanish American wars of independence, as this battle, The Naval Battle of Buceo, which it bicentenary is remembered in this release, was one of the most relevant in that Latin America struggle for Independence, as the immediate consecuence of the winning of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata Navy over the Spanish Empire one, was that the unique way of Provision of the City of Montevideo, at that time held by Spanish loyalists under the leadership of Gaspar de Vigodet and Besieged by landby the Patriotic troopsled by José Rondeau, was cut, and the city faced starvation. Finally, by the end of June,  Gaspar de Vigodet was forced to surrender Montevideo to General Carlos María de Alvear, Ending the Spanish Reign presence in the Banda Oriental.

Also, the remarkable life of the Admiral William Brown (22 June 1777 – 3 March 1857), an Irish-born Argentine Admiral, whose victories in the Independence War, the Cisplatine War, and the Anglo-French blockade of the Río de la Plata, earned the respect and appreciation of the Argentine people, also being the Creator and first Admiral of the Country's Maritime Forces, made that today he is regarded as one of Argentina's National Heroes, and he is commonly known as the "Father of the Argentine Navy". For all that, surely this release could fit in a wide PersonalitiesCollection, or in a more specific ones like: Argentinian Personalities, Argentinian Militars, also, as he was born in Ireland, Irish Personalitiesand Irish Militars, or a larger Historical Militars, and for this reason Militaria itself could be spot as another Topic of this release.

An interesting anecdote that shows the great personality of Admiral William Brown, brings us to August 15th 1842, when he fought a battle on the River Paraná, defeating a Uruguayan riverine fleet of launches commanded by the future hero of the Italian Risorgimento, Giuseppe Garibaldi. Then, because of some misbeahavior of some of his men, Brown refused to accept the victory because of the dishonor brought upon the battle by his men, and Used his influence to have Giuseppe Garibaldi released from prison, where he was awaiting trial and certain execution. Admiral Brown used a saying on such occasions when loyalties were in question to the task, "Even if to the devil the word is given, then it must be kept". Honorin the line of duty was important to William Brown, and his services to his adopted country seen his favor shown to Garibaldi. Giuseppe Garibaldi in recognition of this grace, years later named one of his grandchildren "William" after Brown.

Another good Quotationof Admiral Brownthat shows also his Humility, happened when, after being retired, he was visited by Grenfell, his opponent in the Brazilian War, who remarked him how ungrateful the Republic was to its good servants; the old Admiral replied: "Mr Grenfell, it does not burden me to have been useful to the mother country of my children; I consider the honours and the wealth superfluous when six feet of earth are enough to rest so many difficulties and pains."

His Personality made that Commemorative Stamps showing him were issued in 1957 by the Irish government, and in 1891, 1935, and 1956 by the Argentine government.

Four different Football clubs: Club Atlético Almirante Brown located in the town of Arrecifes, Club Almirante Brownlocated in Isidro Casanova, Brown Athletic Club from Adrogué, and Puerto Madryn-based Guillermo Brown, being the second of them Club Almirante Brown the most relevant of them, whose first uniform kit acquired by the club were the Striped black and yellowworn by Uruguayan CURCC(nowadays Club Atlético Peñarol).

Now, regarding the desing of the stamp:It reinforces the Topic of Naval Battles, that we have chosen as the main one of the release, by showing a beautiful and also dramatic scene, in which several Sailing Ships, fight in open sea. It also reinforce considerably the Sailing Ships of War Ships Topic, as it is what you mainly see in the design, and another Topics could be identified too, as they are: Fire, because many Ships are Burning, also Canyons, and with them Weapons, not only because ot they are which provoked the already mentioned Fire, also because they are represented by the Splash, that they cause when they fall in the Water.

Unfortunately we do not know who is the author of this beautiful Paintingof the Naval Battle of Buceo, besides that, we can infer whith great probability of being right, that the Sail Ship in the center of the scene is the Frigate "Hercules", the Flagshipof the Fleetleaded by Admiral William Brown. The other War Ships that participated in the fight were: Zephyr, Nancy, Julietta, Belfast, Agreeable, Trinidad of the Admiral William Brown Fleet, and from the Spanish Fleet: Hyena, Mercurio, Neptuno, Mercedes, Palomo, and Cisne. All of them Sailing Ships in the categories of Schooners, Brigantines and Corvettes. Probably in the painting some of these Shipsare shown.

Finally, in a more symbolic way:This Naval Combatcould be seen as a symbol of the Fraternityof the Provincesthat are in the region of The Rio de la Plata Basin, as we share most of our History, in particular we share this Event, the Naval Combat of Buceo, that cause the end of our Emancipation Process from the Spanish Empire.

Block:

The block: Put it focus in the Frigate "Hercules", reinforcing Shipsand all Ships derivated Topics already mentioned as: War Ships, then also Old Shipsand Sailing Ships, and finally Frigateor Sailing Frigate. Besides that, what I think is that the most interesting part of the design of this Block is the inclusion of the Plan of the Frigate "Hercules", three drawings of this FrigateStructure from different point of views, that makes this Block a wonderful item in MapsCollection, and specially in a Maps of Things Collection, that is clearly less wide than Maps in general, as most of them show Geographic Maps, and of course it is perfect for a Maps of ShipsCollection.

Then, it also reinforces the HistoryTopic and it more precise ones: History of Uruguay and History of Argentina, both inside a wider History of Southamerica, focused on the Emancipation of Southamerica, or the Liberty of Southamerica, or the Spanish American wars of independence, as his main legend refers to the Second Siege of Montevideo (1812 - 1814) and the two opponents in this war:  The United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, and the Spanish Empire.

Finally, it also reinforce the Personalitiestopics and the already mentioned: Argentinian Personalities, Argentinian MilitarsIrish Personalities and Irish Militars, or a larger Historical Militars, introducing the name of Admiral William Brownin its text.

FDC:

The desing of the First Day Cancelation:Besides reinforcing the MapsTopic, it also add the Geographical Map Topic, and perhaps more precise ones as: Old Geographic Mapsor City of Montevideo Maps, as it shows a Map of the City of Montevideo from the beginnings of XIX Centruy. Then, it reinforces the Shipsor Sailing Shipstoo, as in the Map, four Ships are included.

Issue:

As Main Topic: Politics could be the more comprehensive one, and in the path of going to more specific ones, one could spot first Left Wing Political Parties, and then Communist Party, later reducing geographically, Uruguayan Communist Party, and finally the Sectional 20 of the Uruguayan Comunist Party, that is the one commemorated in this release, after being declared National Historic Landmark, to Preserve the Memory that this Sectional, 42 years ago, on April 17th of 1972, was Taken by Assaultby more than 500 members of Militar, Police, and Paramilitary Forces, and eight Communist workers were cowardly Assassinated.

The eight Martyrsthat were Executedin the Assaultwere: Luis Mendiola, José Abreu, José Sena, Elman Fernández, Héctor Cervelli, Ruben López, Ricardo González and Raúl Gancio.

Then, surrounding the main topic, could be found the followings: The first is Human Rights, and the Fight for Human Rights. Then, could be Criminality, in particular Government Criminality, and also Fascism and Government Terrorism.

Also, History, and more precisely Uruguayan History, or Recent Uruguayan History is a clearly a Topic of this release too.

Now, regarding the desing of the stamp:A complete different topic is included by it, that is Art, in particular Painting, and more precisely Mural Painting.

The Muralshown is the Stamp is the actual Facadeof the Sectional 20 of Uruguayan Communist Party, and it was painted in 2013 by the Plastic ArtistAlvaro Ortiz, born in the Department of San José of Uruguay.

The Muralof Alvaro Ortizis plenty of Objectsand Symbolism, that makes this release useful in many Topic Collections.

You can easily see a white Pigeonsymbolizing Peace, and useful for Birdsand AnimalsTopics.

Also a background of Ears of Wheatthat infer Abundancyand Worktoo, and also it is useful for the Topics of Vegetables, Flora, Agriculture, and even Food.

Vegetablesand Floraare reinforced by the Flowershown at the left-bottom corner, that could be placed to bring the Epoch of the Sixties, and the HippieIdeology or Way of Life.

Then, Musicand Music InstrumentTopics are included in the Mural with the presence of a Guitar.

At the horizon of the Scene shown in the Mural, there are eight Hands in the Gesture of a Fight Fist, one Fist for each MartyrAssessinatedin the Sectional 20. Also, the location of the Fistsat the horizon resembles Chimneysof Factories, that gives an additional connection with Work and Industry.

Finally, the scene has his focus on two women, one making a Sickle with a Hammer over an Anvil, being these Hammer and Sickle a clear rererence to theCommunist Party, and the other women carrying a Lantern, probably symbolizing the Search for Justice, Human Rights, and Equality, and also making the release useful for a Collection about Fire.

The scene also has Paintbrushsto establish the importance of Artin the Welfareof a CommunityBooks to add a Link to the need of Educationto build a Society, and Wrenches, Spanners and Nuts surely to Symbolize Work.

Finally, in a more symbolic way:besides all the symbolism already mentioned, I think the big message in this release, is Recognition, is Progress of a Nation in Equality, is Progress in Human Rights, is Honour the Fight for Freedom, Honour the Fight for a better Society, is Preserve the Memory of those who died for our Welfare, to Thank them, to Inspire in us the same Fightthat they do.

Block:

The block: as it only shows an iconic design of Handsin the Gestureof a Fight Fistin the proof of colour on the right-top corner of the Block, reinforces the Hands or FistsTopics, or even a wider Human Body Parts Collection, and also could be useful for a peculiar Collection of Gestures, or one about Fightor Symbols.

FDC:

The desing of the First Day Cancelation:It is a rather poetic one, as it nicely represent the eight Workers that were Assessinated by Eight Nuts. This Symbolic Creationwas not made by the post office graphic designer, it is part of the Facade of the Sectional 20 of the Comunist Party, and it is placed at the left of the part of the portion of it that is shown in the Stamp. This Nutshonouring the Martyrs were not created by Alvaro Ortiz, the Artist that mades the actual Mural that is shown in the Stamp, as they already exist before 2013, the moment in which this Muralwas painted.

If you consider that there are another topics in this stamp, that were not spot in this review, you are encouraged to telling me about them, so please do not hesitate to post a comment. I would appreciate your help very much.
