Topics:

Issue:

As Main Topic: The Militaria or Militar issues is clearly the main topic of this Special Cancelation. Most specific inside that wide topic will be the Military of Uruguay, then more precise the Army of Uruguay, and finally this particular Mechanized Infantry Battalion called "Batallón de Infantería Mecanizado 2: Resistencia", that his 175th anniversary is commemorated in this release.

Then, surrounding the main topic, could be found the followings: The first that cames to our mind is History, in particular the History of Uruguay, as this Battalion participated merely in the internal conflicts that ocurred after the Independence of Uruguay, known as "Guerra Grande", in english "Big War", that was The Uruguayan Civil War, a series of Armed conflicts that took place between the Colorado Party and the National Party in Uruguay from 1839 to 1851, with both parties receiving backing from foreign sources including both neighbouring countries such as the Empire of Brazil and the Argentine Confederation as well as imperial powers, primarily the British Empire and the Kingdom of France, but also a legion of Italian volunteers including Giuseppe Garibaldi.

The more remarkable participation of this Battalion was in the defense of Montevideo in coordination with another Battalion led by Giusseppe Garibaldi, in the Great Siege of Montevideo done by the forces led by Manuel Oribe. Due to this extraordinary defense was that later received, by the president of that time Joaquín Suarez, the actual name of "Resistencia", that in english means Resistence.

It also related to this Special Cancelation the History of SouthAmerica, and in particular the History of Argentina, as this Battalion also participated in the Battle of Caseros , that was fought near the Town of Caseros, in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, on February 3rd of 1852, between the Army of Buenos Aires commanded by Juan Manuel de Rosasand the Grand Army (Ejército Grande) led by Justo José de Urquiza.

Now, regarding the desing of the Special Cancelation:it clearly introduces the topic of Uniforms, and more in particular Militar Uniforms or Historical Militar Uniforms, as the Special Cancelation shows a Soldierwearing the First uniform of the Battalion "Resistencia".

Also the topic Weapons, and in particular Fire Weapons are included, as the Soldier in the design is carrying a Rifle. And also, the topic of Hatsis represented by the Morion, a type of open Helmet, that is wearing the Soldier. Then, going even deeper, and knowing how is this Morion, the Topics Music and Mineralsare included too, as the Morion has in his design, the figure of a goldmade Natural horn, a Musical instrument that is the ancestor of the modern-day Horn, and is differentiated by its lack of valves. The inclustion of this Horn is to honour the first name of the Battalion that was "Batallón de Cazadores", that in english means Battalion of Hunters, that has the Natural Horn as his main Symbolto express his Courage.

Finally, in a more symbolic way:The selection of the first uniform of the Battalion, focus the release in the past of the Uruguayan Army, when it was involved in his most heroic battles, reinforcing the Topic History of Uruguayon the release.

Stamps selection:

The stamps selected were: Two releases from year 2004 that celebrated the Centenaryof other two Battalions of the Uruguayan Army. The first honours the 100 Years Anniversary of the Mechanized Infantry Battalion No. 10 called "33 Orientales", and the second one does the same for the Armored Infantry Battalion No. 13.

The reason for selecting these stamps was:Mainly because both were stamps commemorating the Anniversary of others Battalions, however, I put a special focus in the Mechanized attribute of the Battalion "Resistencia" of this Special Cancelation, so, taking account this focus was that I find this two stamps that shows Army Vehicles, as the most suitable ones for this Special Cancelation.

The selection of this stamps, add the following topics: Clearly the Topic best represented in the selected stamps are Militar Vehicles, or a more general Vehicles, or even more extensive Transports, as the design of both stamps selected includes this kind of Vehicles. The first include an Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), that is a type of Armoured Fighting Vehicledesigned to transport infantry to the battlefield, also colloquially referred to as 'battle taxis' or 'battle buses'. Then the second stamp shows a Tank, a large type of armoured fighting vehicle with tracks, designed for front-line combat.

It also add the already mentioned Battalions 10 and 13 of the Uruguayan Army, and also the Centenaries, or 100 Years Topic.

Finally, the Personality of José Gervasio Artigascould be inferred from the Rossete or Cockadethat is placed as background in the first stamp. And the Militar Uniform Topic is reinforced by the second stamp, as it shows a more actual Militar Uniform.

If you consider that there are another topics in this stamp, that were not spot in this review, you are encouraged to telling me about them, so please do not hesitate to post a comment. I would appreciate your help very much.

Issue:

As Main Topic: The Militaria or Militar issues is clearly the main topic of the stamp. Most specific inside that wide topic will be the Military of Uruguay, then more precise the Army of Uruguay, and finally this particular Infantry Battalion called "Batallón de Infantería 1: Florida", that his 185th anniversary is commemorated in this release.

Then, surrounding the main topic, could be found the followings: The first that cames to our mind is History, in particular the History of Southamerica, focus on the Emancipation of Southamerica, or the Liberty of Southamerica, or the Spanish American wars of independence, as this Battalion was created when this emancipation was happening, and has his main activity during the Cisplatine War, an armed conflict over an area known as Banda Oriental or the "Eastern Shore" (roughly present-day Uruguay) in the 1820s between the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata and the Empire of Brazil in the aftermath of the United Provinces' emancipation from Spain. During the Cisplatine War, the "Florida" Battalion has an heroic performance specially in the Battle of Ituzaingó, that was fought in vicinity of Santa Maria river, in a valley of small hills where a stream divided the valley in two, in which Juan Antonio Lavalleja, led the battalion under the command of Carlos María de Alvear, and beat Marquis of Barbacena. Also tied with this Battalion is the personality of Eugenio Garzón, as he was it first Chief.

Another Topic that could ber related to this Battalion cames from his name "Florida", that cames from the Department of Florida, that is a department of Uruguay that is located in the south of the central part of this country, and was named this way by Venancio Flores, before the "Batalla de Las Cañas", a battle that took place in 1863 in which Venancio Flores beat Diego Eugenio Lamas, and was named that way because many of the soldiers of this battalion were born in that department.

Now, regarding the desing of the stamp:It is clear that two topics emerges, one is Coat of Arms, as in the left side of the stamp is shown the Coat of arms of the Battalion "Florida", and the other is Architecture, because in the right side the Palace "Palacio Legislativo" is shown. The selection of this Building to be included in the design of the stamp is because the main function of this Battalion is to protect the Legislature powerthat work in this building.

Now going inside the Coat of Arms of the Battalion, many topics could be discovered: The first is the Cross, a Red Cross, similar to the one used by the Battalion in the Paraguay War, also known as the War of the Triple Alliance, was an international military conflict in South America fought from 1864 to 1870 between Paraguay and the Triple Alliance of Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. This cross divides the Field of the Shieldin four Cantons, however only the two of the top are filled with symbols. The left one has a Sword hilt similar to the one used by one of his more emblematic Chiefs Lorenzo Latorre, that is the head of the Animal Lion, and it is made of the Mineral Gold, this Lion also honour another Chief of this Battalion: León de Palleja, and serves as Symbol of Vigilance, Strength, Courage, Defense of sovereignty. Then, the right canton shows an also made of gold Natural horn, a Musical instrument that is the ancestor of the modern-day horn, and is differentiated by its lack of valves, honours the first name of the Battalion that was "Batallón de Cazadores", that in english means Battalion of Hunters, and also the Horn symbolizes Courage. Outside the field of the Coat of Arm, on top of it, there is a A Morion , a type of open Helmet, that was part of the traditional Uniform of the Battalion, then behind the shield are two Rifles, a Firearm designed to be fired from the shoulder, with a barrel that has a helical groove or pattern of grooves ("rifling") cut into the barrel walls, with a Bayonet, a Knife, Sword, or spike-shaped Weapon designed to fit in, on, over or underneath the muzzle of a rifle, musket or similar weapon, turning the Gun into a Spear. That two Rifles were positioned in a Saltire way, an Heraldic symbol in the form of a diagonal cross, like the shape of the letter X in Roman type, also called Saint Andrew Crossas is said that he have been martyred on such a cross, and it was used in the Coat of Arms to symbolize the Sacrifice of the soldiers of Infantry, and also the use of the Fusils used in the Period of José Gervasio Artigas, represents the ideal of Independence, Republic and Federation of the Artiguism, that is the reference ideology of the Army. Finally, below the field there is a Cross Pattée , a type of Cross which has arms narrow at the centre, and broader at the perimeter, and it is Military merit medal that was granted to the Battalion.

Then, regarding The "Palacio Legislativo", the site where the Uruguayan Parliament meets, which building started in 1904 sponsored by the government of President José Batlle y Ordoñez, designed by Italian architectsVittorio Meano and Gaetano Moretti, who planned the building's interior, and adorned with notable contributions by the Sculptor José Belloni, who created numerous Reliefs and Allegorical Sculptures for the building. Finally in the picture of the palace, the Flags topic is also included as the Flag of Uruguay, and surely, although barely seen, the Flag of Artigas at his right, are waving in their masts. The Flag of Artigas pays homage to José Gervasio Artigas, national hero of Uruguay, and has three horizontal stripes, the top and bottom being blue, and the central one white, and on top of them, it has a diagonal red stripe.

Finally, in a more symbolic way:As the "Palacio Legislativo", is the place in which the laws are created and established, the Legal System topic, and even the Laws topic could be infered from the stamp.

Block:

The block: Only reinforces the Topic Militaria, adding it as the icon selected to show the inks used in printing the Block, the figure of what seems to be Soldiers

FDC:

The desing of the First Day Cancelation:It only help to strengthen two topics that already exist in the stamp, that are the Hat Topic and the Weapons Topic, as it replaces the field and the merit medal of the Coat of Arm of the Battalion, with only the Morrion and the Rifles crossed behind it.

If you consider that there are another topics in this stamp, that were not spot in this review, you are encouraged to telling me about them, so please do not hesitate to post a comment. I would appreciate your help very much.

This stamp commemorates the Centenary of the "Club Neptuno", in english: "Neptune Club", a historical sport and social club of Montevideo, that was in its beginnings solely dedicated to water related sports, and that later extended its participation to other sports, having remarkable teams in basketball and volleyball.

The stamp was released just one day after the Centenary, as the club was founded on December 2nd, 1912, by Amador Franco, a swimming instructor that encouraged some amateur athletes to support him in the creation of this club, in a moment of a great boom of swimming sport.

The desing of the stamp depicts an action in a water polo match, with a background of the building of the club headquarter.

The club name honour the roman god of freshwater and the sea with the same name, and whose trident is the main object of the club coat of arms and logotype.

Neptune (Latin: Neptūnus) was the Roman god of freshwater and the sea in Roman religion. He is the counterpart of the Greek god Poseidon. In the Greek-influenced tradition, Neptune was the brother of Jupiter and Pluto, each of them presiding over the realms of Heaven, our earthly world and the Underworld, respectively.

Neptune was likely associated with fresh water springs before the sea. Like Poseidon, Neptune was worshipped by the Romans also as a god of horses, under the name Neptunus Equester, a patron of horse-racing.

Water polo, or Water ball, is a team water sport. The playing team consists of six field players and one goalkeeper. The winner of the game is the team that scores the most goals. Game play involves swimming, treading water (using a sort of kicking motion known as "eggbeater kick"), players passing the ball while being defended by opponents, and scoring by throwing the ball into a net defended by a goalie. 'Man-up' (or 'power play') situations occur frequently. Water polo, therefore, has strong similarities to the land-based game of team handball.

The history of water polo as a team sport began as a demonstration of strength and swimming skill in late 19th century England and Scotland, where water sports and racing exhibitions were a feature of county fairs and festivals. Men's water polo was among the first team sports introduced at the modern Olympic games in 1900. Water polo is now popular in many countries around the world, notably Europe (particularly in Serbia, Russia, Croatia, Italy, Montenegro, Greece and Hungary), the United States, Canada and Australia. The present-day game involves teams of seven players (plus up to six substitutes), with a water polo ball similar in size to a soccer ball but constructed of waterproof nylon.

One of the earliest recorded antecedents of the modern game of Water Polo was a game of water ‘hand-ball’ played at Bournemouth on 13 July 1876. This was a game between 12 members of the Premier Rowing Club, with goals being marked by four flags placed in the water near to the midpoint of Bournemouth Pier. The game started at 6.00pm in the evening and lasted for 15 minutes (when the ball burst) watched by a large crowd; with plans being made for play on a larger scale the following week.

The rules of water polo were originally developed in the late nineteenth century in Great Britain by William Wilson. Wilson is believed to have been the First Baths Master of the Arlington Baths Club in Glasgow. The first games of 'aquatic football' were played at the Arlington in the late 1800s (the Club was founded in 1870), with a ball constructed of India rubber. This "water rugby" came to be called "water polo" based on the English pronunciation of the Balti word for ball, pulu. Early play allowed brute strength, wrestling and holding opposing players underwater to recover the ball; the goalie stood outside the playing area and defended the goal by jumping in on any opponent attempting to score by placing the ball on the deck.

The desing of the stamp is completed with the legend: "100 Años Club Neptuno", that in english mean "100 Years of Neptune Club", also the logotype of the club with trident and the letter 'N', and a "100" as a vanished graffiti on the up part of the stamp.

Finally, the stamp could also be useful for a hats or clothing collection, because of the caps that water polo player usually wears and are shown in the stamp. And also, the trident in the club logotype, could make the stamp useful for weapon related collections.

FDC:

The Cancelation of the FDC it is a simple one, and besides the legend: "100 Años Club Neptuno", also includes the Club logotype with the trident and the big 'N' letter.
